RECU CE MAIL AUJOURD'HUI

Dear friends,

As you are probably aware, sexual harassment on the streets of is a growing problem.  Harassment takes many forms, all sharing the basic tone of aggression and causing the target to feel violated or unsafe.  In recent months, ECWR has received a huge volume of complaints from women in – both Egyptian and foreign, who face a daily and sometimes overwhelming barrier to accomplishing the simplest tasks because they must face varying levels of intimidation, public exposure or other violent acts almost every time they leave their home.

It is clear to us that this problem is becoming very serious and it is increasing in frequency and in intensity.  ECWR cannot be silent on this issue anymore.  It is time for both women and men to speak out against harassment and claim their right to walk in their own streets without fear.

In the coming months, ECWR will be preparing a campaign against the sexual harassment of women that will target the Egyptian media and general public, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Education.  We will hold a press conference to officially launch our program in January.

But we need your help!  Before we can plan the details of our project, we need your stories so that we can understand and document the problem, analyze it and find the right actions to fight it.  We will collect as many stories from as many women as possible, collect them into a report to prove our case and pressure the government and media to address this problem.

Please help us by sending your stories!

Send as many stories as you want.  And tell your friends to send theirs too.  We need as many stories as possible to make this campaign work.  You can remain anonymous or make up a false name, but please try to remember the places, dates and times of your story so that we can use it to identify police officers on duty.

Here is the information we need:

 1.     Your name (optional):

  2.     Your age:

 3.     Place harassment happened:

 4.     Date and time harassment happened:

 5.     Who harassed you?

 6.     About how old was he?

 7.     What happened?

 8.     What was the reaction of other people around you?

 9.     Did you go to the police?

 10. If no, why?

 11. If yes, what happened?

 12. How did you feel after the harassment happened?

 13. Did you receive any support from other people?

 14. If yes, how?

I bet they're gonna receive zillions of testimonials but then again this might be considered as taboo! I remember a study on Tunisian women in the workplace and the testimonials I read were quite shocking! People need their salaries, the society is quite closed minded & judgemental and bosses take advantage of it.
Hope you didn't get any annoyances there!
